PRTC Weekly: 05/09/2019 (Broad Street and More)

Broad Street

Philadelphia, PA: PRTC had 64 members race the 40th annual Broad Street Run! The club was greeted at the start line by persistent light rain. Concern that poor weather would result in a slow day was set aside as warm ups ended and anticipation rose for the run to begin.

The race kicked off and all talk of rain was quickly forgotten as tens of thousands rushed down Broad Street, toward City Hall, South Philly, and ultimately the Navy Yard. Some of us went out too fast, others perhaps too slow, and a few fortunate souls stuck to their pacing plans perfectly. In the end, it seemed to matter little. Successes were roundly celebrated at the finish!

By our unofficial tally more than 57% of the club PR'd. It is a daunting prospect for us to issue a full athlete by athlete report given our numbers. Our apologies for not being able to celebrate all members individually. Suffice to say, we're proud of everyone's accomplishments. Please kindly consider these highlights:

Paul Matuszak was top Philadelphian in the men's race. His 49:20 placed him inside the top 10 and represented a significant PR in the distance. He also recorded the best Age Graded Result on the day which offers us a strong boost in the USATF Mid-Atlantic Grand Prix Challenge.

Also on the men's side, Matt Kane, Ethan Hermann, and Chris Mullin all scored top 20 finishes. Ethan's race in particular stands out  as a highlight. He had an outstanding result of 51:16 after entering the race thinking of breaking 53 minutes. Great work! In total, 19 of 38 men recorded lifetime records. We were pleased to have many make their club debuts and in awe of everyone's performances.

Sam Roecker won top Philadelphian and placed an impressive 4th overall. Her performance marks the start of an exciting new round of racing. Margret Vido and Meghan Bishop (racing just a week after her standout performance in NJ!) joined Sam in the top 10 at 8th and 9th. They were closely followed by many PRTC teammates who had great performances of their own. This includes Liz Barrett who had a significant breakthrough and new PR.

As on the men's side, we were excited to see many new members make their team debuts. 18 of our 26 female participants returned new PR's. A remarkable achievement!

Post-race, athletes enjoyed the Philadelphia Runner party in FDR Park, warm showers, dry clothes, fun in Center City, and Chris Mateer/David Choi's hospitality in West Philly. The Sixers may have lost, but Genesee Cream Ale, pizza, and fun were in high supply.

Thank you all for being part of our community! We firmly believe that many of these PR's would not have been possible without our strong training groups. Staying motivated and having partners to share in the enjoyment of this great sport is so important. Check out our updated race calendar below to plan out what comes next. Also, be sure to consider stopping by our sponsor Phila Massage for a discounted post-race massage.

Congratulations to all who finished this year's Broad Street Run!
