PRTC Bi-Bi Weekly 5/25/2023: Broad Recap, Mayor's Club Pep Rally!

Mayor's Cup Pep Rally - 5/31

Mayor's Cup is coming back and the Pep Rally is right around the corner. This Wednesday (5/31) at 5:30pm the Pep Rally will be held at Craft Hall at 901 N Delaware Ave

The pep rally is a chance to hang with some other clubs, register for the race ($5 discount!), and the first 50 registrants will claim a free beer.

For those unfamiliar with the Mayor's Cup, it's a great competition between clubs in the city held at the Belmont Plateau and serves as the unofficial kick off to the fall racing season. There is a cross-county 5k, road 5 mile, trail 10k, road 10 mile, and trail half marathon. The top finisher from each club for men and women scores in each event, so it's important to have a representative in each event. You can let everyone know which event you intend to enter hereand we can fill in any gaps as needed.

The race will be held August 12th this year.

Also, less important (or maybe more idk), we're having a club hang at Other Half this Saturday at 7pm. Come out and enjoy the nice weather if you're in town!

Race Results

Penn Relays

It was a wet and wild one at the Penn Relays. Friday night was probably the worst weather we had all year, full stop, but that didn't stop a strong contingent of the club from hammering out corporate DMR legs and soggy 5ks.

In the corporate DMR, Vicente Iglesias wrapped up his fantastic spring season with an anchor leg of the SIG DMR that took 5th overall, Pat Taggart led off the Globus Medical team that took 9th overall, and Frank Dougherty anchored the 11th place All4 team.

The women's 5k was up next and Alyssa Condell brought the highest club finish of the night with a huge sub 17 5k, coming in 3rd overall with a 16:49 effort in the less-than-deal conditions. Maria Seykora also had a fantastic effort, running 17:01 for 12th.

Liam Galligan highlighted the men's race with a 7th overall finish in 14:36. A trio men battled it out together, as David Dorsey came in 18th with a 15:09, Connor Harriman finished one spot back in 15:13, and Declan Walkush fought through to a 21st finish in 15:24. Club Alum, Aidan Konhaus made his return to Philly with a 15:53 finish.

Broad Street 10 Mile

This one is too big for much commentary, but let's do a handful of highlights:
Highest Finish Women and extremely close honorable mention: Kayla Lampe in 10th (56:17) and Ellen Feringa in 11th (56:19)
Highest Finish Men: Paul Matuszak in 15th (15th)
Top Philadelphian: Joe Maguire in 50:21 (24th)
2nd Masters (behind a 62 half guy): Steve Gourley in 52:39 (46th overall)

It's a tough one to dive much deeper into with so many finishers, so many PRs, and so many strong races all around. Broad Street Sunday is one of the best days of the year and it's amazing seeing the club turnout for this one in droves.

Widener Last Chance

For college kids, they call it a last chance because it's the last chance to qualify for nationals. For us, it's the last chance because we're all getting old.

Well maybe not if you're Paul Matuszak, who at the age of 36 and on his 3rd kid, smashed his 5k PR with a 14:21, good enough for 7th overall.PRTCwas also represented by Cody Amengual and David Choi, who finished in 15:29 and 15:38, respectively.

Speaking of dads, Mike Tait set a season best in the 800m with a 2:01.22. Running his first of two events for the day was Ben Nieto in 2:03.81.

In the 1500m, Calvin Schneck led the way with a 3:56.18, improving on his 4:57 from the Bucknell Invite earlier in the season. Frank Livosi tuned up for his pending ultramarathon with a 4:013.14. Ben Nieto came back with a 4:12.12 for his 2nd event of the day.

In the steeple, Declan Walkush ran to a 6th place finish with a 9:38 final time.

In the women's 1500m, Alyssa Condell came off her fantastic race at the Penn Relays to take 8th overall in 4:40.83.

Track Night NYC

When heading to NYC for a race, it's usually not the competition or weather that'll get you. It's the traffic.

Overcoming hours in the car and short warm ups, Zoe Matherne, Maria Seykora, and Liam Galligan headed north for deep fields.

Zoe Matherne highlighted the night with her 5th overall finish in the 1500m, as she ran a new PR of 4:25.13. Maria finished in 13th with a 4:44.99 finishing time.

Liam took 13th overall in the men's field with a 3:55.12.
